Apparel Tips: Debunking the Myths of Cycling Clothing

What No One Talks About - The great myths of cycling apparel

Cycling Clothing - The Unspeakable :

1. Underwear are NOT worn under cycling shorts. You want direct contact with the chamois. The idea is to avoid any seams or rubbing.

2. Chamois Creme (a.k.a. butt butter) is highly recommended and is best if applied directly to the chamois itself, covering the entire pad, rather than the "front and back dip and swipe method". 3. Wash your shorts! Don't even consider wearing those cycling shorts for a second or third day.  Cycling Shorts are a one day item, only, and should be removed as soon as you stop pedaling the bike (considering your surroundings first).

4. Spit to the SIDE please! No one likes wearing added spit ornaments on their cycling jerseys!

Myths of Cycling Apparel and Gear:

1. Wool is best in cold Weather: Not so Much. With todays wicking technical clothing you will likely stay warmer and dryer (and weigh less) in modern quality cycling clothing.

2. I look cooler riding without my helmet: Yeah Right. Just about as cool as you will look in the hospital ward with a brain injury and no one to care for you because they are out riding their bikes. Wear Your Helmet.  And call out to others who aren't wearing theirs!

3. In warm weather wear a no sleeve jersey: sun exposure adds to fatigue; only if you are riding less than 10 miles or if it is really really hot should your go without sleeves on your bike jersey.  Sleeves protect your skin from the wind and sun and will result in less fatigue from the elements over a long ride. There is a reason why those who live in the Middle East cover up, and you never see Tiger Woods wearing a Tank Top. *TIP: Having a long zipper on your jersey is a better way to regulate your core temperature.
